St. John's, Newfoundland

10/2/2021

St. John's, a classic harbor city, is capital of Newfoundland. Old accents and customs are common, yet Saint John is still modern. The city recently celebrated its 500th anniversary as a modern city with preserved heritage and culture. It offers old world charm, unique architectural and historic landmarks, fine cuisine and many other attractions. Historic downtown features unique sites, such as Cabot Tower on Signal Hill overlooking the harbor and the city. The famous friendliness, hospitality and charm of the people of Saint John, plus the Newfoundland folk music found in many of the lively waterfront bars, ensure a perfect visit. A 3 mile Rennies River Trail cuts through the city along a wooded stream and ends at the only public fluvarium in North America, where in late October/early November one can observe spawning brown and brook trout in their natural habitat through underwater windows. The Bowring Victorian park was donated by the wealthy Bowring family in 1911, and resembles the parks of London after which is was modeled.

St. George's, Bermuda
10/6/2021
10/6/2021

St. George’s Island was the site of the Sea Ventures’s wreck in 1609. Its major settlement, St. George’s, was founded in 1612 and was once the capital of Bermuda. Filled with historic buildings, it contains St. Peter’s Church, the oldest continously used Protestant house of worship in the Western Hemisphere. The parish is flanked by Castle Harbour on the western and southern edges and divided into two halves by St. George’s Harbour. St. David’s Island is linked to the rest of Bermuda by the Severn Bridge, which lies near the U.S. Naval Air Station and the country’s international airport. The people who inhabit this most easterly part of Bermuda are long-time sailors and fishers. St. George’s Parish also includes Tucker’s Town, founded in 1616 by Governor Daniel Tucker on the opposite shore of Castle Harbour.

Fort de France
10/11/2021
10/11/2021

Set in a large bay on the leeward side of the island looking out onto the Caribbean sea, Fort de France became the capital of Martinique when St Pierre was wiped out by the eruption of the volcano Montagne Pelée in 1902.

The town has mushroomed from less than 10,000 inhabitants at the time of the eruption to its current level of nearly 100,000 people. The historical centre grew around the strategic point of the Fort Saint Louis, which was first established in 1638. There are numerous cultural and historical places of interest in Fort-de-France, as well as a wide choice of quality shops, restaurants, cafes and bars, selling French and Creole products. English is widely spoken and understood, and US Dollars are accepted in most outlets.

Bridgetown (Barbados)

10/12/2021

The island’s capital, Bridgetown, is one of the Caribbean's major free ports, bustling with activity. Trafalgar Square features the monument to Horatio Nelson. Facing the square are handsome structures of the House of Assembly and the Legislative buildings. George Washington worshipped at St. Michael’s Cathedral during the only trip he made outside of the United States. Housed in former British military prison buildings, the Barbados Museum is divided into various galleries that feature exhibits depicting the history of Barbados from the pre-Columbian period to modern times.
Built in 1816, Gun Hill Signal Station is the finest of several signal stations on the island. The white limestone lion behind the garrison is a well-known landmark. Barbados boasts excellent golf courses. A wide range of watersports is available at hotels and special watersports centers.
